Capacity Building of Health Workers / Medical Officers
in South India on Biomedical Waste Management
 

Biomedical waste is any waste that is generated during the diagnosis, treatment or immunization of human beings or animals or in research activities pertaining thereto or in the production or testing of biologicals including human anatomical waste, animal waste, microbiology and biotechnology waste, waste sharps, discarded medicine and cytotoxic drugs.

Biomedical waste poses risks not only for the generators but also for the general public – if not properly managed. The awareness about biomedical waste management techniques has to be created among the stakeholders to contain the general damage and multiplying effect of it.
 
C.P.R. Environmental Education Centre with the support of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India has taken up a capacity building initiative to train health workers and medical officers in the four southern states.

 
Project Objectives
 
Highlight the present trends in Biomedical Waste Management.
Orient the participants about Biomedical Waste Management Rules and their implications.
Identify and trace out the problem areas in effective management of Biomedical Waste Management.
Document and disseminate effective management practices found in South India in managing Biomedical Waste Management.
Identify partnership initiatives in managing Biomedical Waste Management.
